American Hero

I was a wise fool.
I walked about Harvard Square and bought a Playboy at the kayos.
An attractive young woman ran past me.

She was immediately struck by a box delivery truck.
Her limp body was thrown back at my feet.
I checked her arms and throat for a pulse.

I couldn't find any pulse.
Two squad cars drove up with lights and sirens blaring.
One officer checked the woman for a pulse.

He did not find one, but did try C.P.R.
Two officers questioned the man driving the delivery truck.
The lady was dead.

I was asked if I knew the woman.
I told them I was just a bystander.
But she was running against the light.

The delivery driver was taken away in handcuffs in a squad car.
I gave the officer my address and home phone number.
This was before cell phones.

I did not feel heroic.
It was saddening to see such a beautiful woman dead.
It was a senseless death...

Back in the 1980s...in November.
