Collusion

When they barred the migrants, I shrugged,
because I already had my share.

When they vilified Muslims and Jews, I thanked God,
because I was raised a Christian.

When they killed black men, I gave them the benefit of the doubt,
because I've always been a fair person.

When they went after the gays and trans, I followed along,
because I'm a straight arrow.

When they subjugated women, I kept quiet,
because I'm the strong, silent type.

When they rigged the elections, I didn't step forward,
because I never volunteered for change.

When they outlawed dissent, I didn't object,
because I'm a law-abiding patriot.

When they came for my neighbor, I turned my back,
because I was never on his side.

When they took my guns, I knelt alone,
because I had no other choice.

And when they fastened my shackles, I wept,
because I'd put them on myself.
