April 21—A Poem About Being A Grown-Up

There is a phrase
Common among younger people
In their 20’s and 30’s

Called “adulting”
Referring to all the things
That adults have to do

I always thought
That this phrase
Was almost nonsensical

But then I became
An adult
Back in the day

Where there was
No such word
To describe
Being an adult

And becoming an adult
Was a much simpler thing
Then in the era
Of helicopter parents

Overprotective
Of their children

And young children
Are not allowed
To “free range”
Be out in public

Without their over
Protective “parental units”
Watching their every movement
