When I wake in the morning
I am never not broken.
Some fear, anxiety, small pain
always breaks through.
But I choose how to put myself back together,
like the sea oats I pass
at each beach entrance,
survivors of Ian and Idalia.
I ride my sadness and confusion
down to the water.
I dissolve my edges
becoming softer and softer
knowing that the sea oats
deep, dense roots
anchor the sand, their entire habitat.
As I roll, swell, and surge
I pray that my roots too, will hold.
