Westerns were a popular genre during the second decade of American cinema, and they were successful at the box office. The American public was looking for an escape from the reality that they were living in; unemployment, economic decline, etc. Many American people wished they could be part of a rugged group like the cowboys in these movies. They would often dress up and adopt the “cowboy look” to fit within this new reality. The popularity of westerns was quite apparent as they were extremely successful at the box office 1.

However, the popularity of Westerns has declined since the 1980s 2. Despite this, Westerns still have a dedicated fan base and continue to be produced 34.
