Waiting For Word
I slam the lid down
on the empty mailbox,
rusted metal protesting
rough treatment.
Still no word.
Trudging back up the drive,
collar turned up
to protect me from the wind
or the shame.
I'd welcome rejection
over the agony
of waiting.
