The Pumpkin - Week 14

A seed, buried amongst the leaves
with carrot scrapings and potato peelings,
into the compost pile received,
meant to decay, not produce seedlings.

Instead, weathered the winter well
warmed by its organic overcoat.
In Spring, burst through its shell
and grew towards the light it sought.

Across the lawn, the vine it crawled,
through the grass, around the tree.
By a Summer sun was called,
to bask in life-giving heat.

Alas the days grew shorter still,
even as the vine grew long.
The nights brought a fall-ish chill,
still its purpose was prolonged.

Till at last, beyond the shade,
one fair bloom was seen.
The vine rejoiced for it had made
one pumpkin, small and green.
