April Fools' Day
April fools’ day

This happened when we were green behind the ears
Our life’s experience scanned only nine or ten years.
Dad called us from his room upstairs
All three of us skipped up from downstairs.

“come on kiddos!” he called out to us.
“I have news before you leave by bus."
We jumped up to his master bed
Which he got after being wed.

We looked up to his handsome face
The frown is gone, a smile in place
You see, he is not a man of words
Yet we know he has a heart of gold.

“Ice cream is cooking in the kitchen”
He said in a casual tone we believed in.
So we ran to the stove without second thoughts
Laughed and realized that ice cream cooks not.

We were made wise on that fools' day
Dad’s gone but some memories stay.
