Cat On A Highway(A Dream)

one paw blue-bruised
from stones cutting ice on a highway

that paw could point,
the other trembling
a cat running away to Annaheim
gone faster
than nobody’s business

now. the razor rays of floodlights
are an accusation that it might
have been found.
whose is it.
could be ours now warming up to
someone else.

this cat is scared. she’d only
meant to peek out quick
at the cotton-candy sky
catch a speck of freedom

the light she looked at was
like the golden pinzors of a crab
each one as stark as a
polished star could get
picking through dusty clouds
as antisceptic as the perfection
of space
as genuine as crystal

staring into a deserted
aquarium at a glowing clownfish

she’d only momentarily lost her
bearings.

oh, dear. we lost one of the
best friends we ever had.
