Letter from the editor

A new beginning

This morning schools in our region started their program for the year 2003-2004. So did the schools of both my sons. My youngest was picked up at 07.45 already to go to school. My oldest son had to be in church an hour later; the entire school was gathered there – with parents and grandparents to open the new school season together. I attended this meeting and while the principal was talking about the changes that were made to the building during Summer Vacation, I wondered away.

A new beginning; what does that mean to me? In every way I have plans to write a bit more than I did in the past few weeks. Promote my books, create new ones maybe? Read more to get inspiration – I don’t know! Mostly I let things and events come my way; it works best for me.

New members on Writing.com just made their first steps in this wonderful world of writing. I assume they are unsure about their future; asking themselves: “Do other people like my work?”

They are stimulated to improve their work, by the comments of their readers. New pieces are written; highlighted in a newsletter etc. I even know that new authors are published into e-zines and even into books.

My goal for this coming year is not set in writing yet. If you have a goal: go for it. Don’t let a bad critique keep you from what you do best. Take time to edit your work and improve it in the best way you can. Older members on Writing.com are here to help you; don’t hesitate to ask them for help.

That brings me to a question:
anathema asked:
I am a newbie to Writing.com. I have posted a story as a static item, The Night God, and have written three reviews and followed the suggestions above. I have only received one review, but it was five stars from a moderator. I was wondering if moderators were required to rate all brand new posts to encourage new writers, because the review came in very shortly after I posted it.

The answer: Moderators are reading works of new authors on a voluntary basis. A group of moderators are gathered in the Noticing Newbies committee; they make sure to welcome new members and read some of their work. They do that in time slots; 24 hours a day. If a moderator is not available for his or her time slot; a “floater” will take over reading. I have to be honest; we can’t read all the new items that come in during a day, but we do our best. *Smile*

If you have questions for us; don’t hesitate to ask; use the little box in the newsletter to submit feedback or questions to us!

On behalf of the readers and the editors of the Noticing Newbies Newsletter I’d like to congratulate two special people: The StoryMaster and The StoryMistress are engaged to be married! We are wishing you a lot of happiness in the coming time, and of course lots of love!
