Letter from the editor

Confusion

No… we are not going to talk about Electric Light Orchestra’s Confusion today. It is a beautiful song though, but that has nothing to do with my kind of confusion. As an author you can have plans – such as writing a novel in 30 days. I started writing mine and got confused. Why?

Well… you can start with a good idea, write the story line down. I did that in the first days, so I had a guideline for writing my novel. But I am at a point now, where my main character can go into different directions. And that is where Mister Confusion puts his head around the corner. He tries to distract me from my goal, pressing thousands of different thoughts through my head. And I wrote some of them down and got confused, while the things I wrote down were not even possible. Unless an UFO comes and gets me of course…(LOL)

So, as you might have noticed, it is not going well with my novel. And I guess that more authors are dealing with the same struggles I have, so I don’t feel alone. On the other hand I have respect for them who are still working on their novel, not disturbed by confusion in one or other way.

But… when you are in a state like this, you have to watch out that you are not falling into Writers Block. Sure, you can let the novel that you are working on, be for the moment. But try to write, maybe work out one of the ideas that popped into your mind out, into a short story. Write a poem or two. Keep that mind going, but don’t focus on the novel. Then you’ll see that your mind is going to put things in place – your state of confusion has solved. In my case, the main character will get a tough time….

So I’ll leave you all now with something to read, I’ll get back on track with my novel. (And no…, I am sorry; my novel is not written in English)

A comment received by camy:
Thanks for the commentary on poetry. I'm such a poetry neanderthal that it was great to have your insights and the "Poetry Forms" link for info. I don't think I'd write poetry often, but it's always good to add to my knowledge!! –Camy
