[Watching children play]

Children are out in winter sun
And as they play along
They roll and jump and strike and run,
They cry and sing a song.

They have no rules of right or wrong.
They do just as they please.
The weak are hit by those who’re strong.
Their antics never cease.

Sometimes when in the winter breeze
There is too much of chill,
It causes the children to sneeze
And their noses to spill.

They simply wipe nose on the frill
Of their so dirty frock.
The older ones climb up the hill
Of pebbles, sand and rock.

From top of hill, others they mock
Giving a joy cry long;
But at the strike of five o’clock
Towards the home they throng.

* Virelay, a French form,is a type of rhyming quatrain where the first and third lines are long and the second and fourth short. There is a specific rhyming scheme portrayed as:

a,b,a,b
b,c,b,c
c,d,c,d
d,e,d,e
e,f,e,f

And so on. There is no limit to this poetry, although the last stanza must consist of the rhyme found in the short lines from the last stanza and the first stanza. [This description is based upon that provided by Bianca in the Writer’s Cramp contest].
