Awakening
14 Mashiyyat 163 B.E. - October 10, 2006

The Holiday Season is upon us. It begins on October 31, Halloween and ends on January 1, New Years day. I have issues with various Holidays. My holiday issues began with Christmas Eve, you see I was born on December 24, 19something or other. My Christmas Issues or perhaps I should say Christmas Eve Issues is a direct result of my birthday. When I was growing up my birthday didn’t seem anything special. When I opened a birthday present, my brothers and sister we allowed to open one of their Christmas presents. My inner child is still pissed about that. Then there is driving on Christmas Eve, that isn’t desirable. I don’t like driving on that day because the roads and the stores are too crowded. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy crowds as long as I am having fun, when I stop having fun then the crowd gets to me.

My next holiday issue is turkey on Thanksgiving. This comes from an experience I had about five or six years ago. I fixed a turkey for my mother and myself. One year later, I defrosted the last of the bird to fix it for Thanksgiving again. If ever fix turkey for Thanksgiving again, it will be only the drumsticks.

My New Year’s (January 1) Issue comes from boredom. New Year’s Day is boring and New Year’s Eve it is unsafe to get out because most people celebrating the New Year are too drunk to know what they are celebrating or why they are driving a car in that condition. You see, I don’t mind having to stay at home because I want to stay at home. The problem comes in when I’m forced to remain in the house because there is either nothing to do or some other reason out of my control.

My Halloween Issue is recent. It comes from the fact that people want to wish me a Happy Halloween. Now at Christmas it doesn’t matter if they wish me a Merry Christmas or Seasons Greetings, but Halloween is different. Halloween is supposed to commemorate the dead, those who have passed on to the next world. A Scary Halloween is OK, but Happy Halloween is a little much.
