Scars
12 Qawl 163 B.E. - December 4, 2006

We all have them
visible for the world to see
or hidden
beneath layers of make-up
hardened
into masks
that conceals our true selves.

Some of the scars we bring from childhood,
from the Christmas Eve birthdays
that the inner child felt slighted,
unloved,
and unspecial
because siblings unwrapping,
one Christmas gift each
shared her birthday;
as adults the understanding comes,
of course,
but the inner child still weeps.

Other scars result
from life’s brutal attacks,
dreams stepped on,
kicked into the gutter
to bleed themselves to death;
healing eventually arrives
on the wings of Divine Mercy
and the wounds scab over
leaving behind
visible reminders
of the struggle for salvation.
