Going to Bed with the Chickens
7 Jalal 164 B.E. - Sunday, April 15, 2007

I went to bed with the chickens last night, not literally but figuratively. I went to be at about 7:00 PM. I watched Outdoor Nevada at 5:30 PM and then the Lawrence Welch Show on Channel 10 (Las Vegas’ PBS channel) at 6:00 PM. Then I turned the T.V. off and went to bed. I didn’t check any e-mails last night or even do the reviews on writing.com I’d planned. I was tired, I was wore out, I couldn’t think properly so instead of doing anything I went to bed, other then putting fresh pillow cases on the pillows, I didn’t do anything else. I even left the light on in the kitchen.

Actually, I think I went to bed before the chickens. It’s been a while since I had anything to do with living chickens. Lately my experience has been with dead and frozen chickens, but I don’t remember them going to roost before the sun went down and I went to bed before it was completely dark. I intended to get up and do other things after an hour, but I went to sleep and didn’t get up until 1:00 AM. I’m rested, I’m in a less negative mood, but apparently I only need about 6 or 7 hours of sleep a night.

My Grandmother always used the term “Going to bed with the chickens” when we went to bed earlier than usual. Normally, I don’t go to bed before 10:00 PM or sometimes even 1:00 AM. However, periodically (maybe about once every 2 or 3 months) I go to be early. I always feel more rested and in a better mood, still it results in me getting up earlier than usual.

I think I’m too harsh on myself. If I don’t get everything I planned completed in a day, I kick myself (not literally either, actually it would be difficult for me to kick myself literally). Today, however, I’m not going to do that instead I’ll just do what I can do and not worry about the rest. It’ll be a nice change. Besides, this is Sunday and a person should pick one day a week not to berate himself or herself. If I can go one day without “shoulding on” myself, I’ll have accomplished something.
