Mother's Day
With the holiday of Mother's Day looming, I took a moment today to reflect on how my relationship with my mother has changed. Several years ago, it was strained at best. I harbored a lot of anger, some of it misplaced for decisions she had made, or that had been forced on her by the events in her life. Without taking the opportunity to try to understand, I passed judgement, often harsh, on her. We are completely different people, despite some quirky common characteristics, and that makes things complicated. It makes our relationship complicated. I've done a lot of work toward trying to be patient and accept her for who and what she is and most importantly, for being happy for what she can give me (in the way of support and affection). Acceptance. Understanding. Common ground. Those have become the foundation for building and fortifying my relationship with my mother these days.
