         I saw my first wild manatee yesterday, floating gracefully three-to-four feet below the surface alongside the promenade to the pier.  He must have been young because he was smaller than I expected... though scars from contact with a rudder were painfully obvious. 

         What an endearingly, peaceful creature.  He seemed to enjoy us as we enjoyed him, floating leisurely on his back while gazing up at us.
