Finally back to my journal!
October 4, 2008

Wow! The summer passed by so quickly. My husband had 2 major surgeries, and the schedule with our son was totally thrown off kilter. Things are back to normal now, but there is no way to catch up the journal entries I failed to make.

We still feel strongly that we have the best therapist we could ask for. She has been our salvation. However, there is only so much progress that can be made if both parents aren't really able to follow through with the structure required. My husband is one of the kindest, gentlest men you will ever meet. However, it is that very quality that I fear will write the obituary of our son's future success in life. With the best of intentions, he seems to be determined to undermine all the structure I try to keep in place for Tony.

All in the guise of "helping" Tony, he brings in his book bag, goes through it to see what homework he has. He wants peace at all costs, and with any Attachment Disorder child, peace comes at a high price. What my husband can't seem to grasp is that in order to finally achieve real peace, the waters have to be stirred, and stirred a lot. In this case, there is definitely a storm before the calm. In order to reach the place where we can have a workable relationship with our son, we first have to shake up his whole way of thinking.

He started out in life discovering that grown-ups were not to be trusted. He learned early that he must take care of himself. In order for him to trust us and obey us, a lot of faulty thinking has to be corrected. That won't happen as long as my husband continues to do everything in his power to keep Tony happy.

You see, real happiness is something Tony doesn't even comprehend. Happiness to Tony is getting his way about anything and everything. That's why it's so hard make progress. It's an uphill battle all the way, not only against Tony, but also against the misguided notions of my husband, James.

Truthfully, I am very tired of the battle. Even warrior moms can suffer from battle fatigue. Some days it seems like I will never find the strength to conquer this disorder!
