Afterward, I thought about you Daddy.

I was drinking coffee
and I spilled the contents of the up
on the floor.

I remember the first cup of coffee
I ever spilled, Daddy,
I was only three or four,
it was a Sunday morning
and you didn’t have to go to work
at the Zinc Smelter.

I was setting on your lap,
you were drinking coffee
and reading the Sunday comics to me;
I reach out,
I pulled your cup of hot coffee
onto our laps
you and Mom rushed me to the hospital
where the doctors and the nurses
took care of my burns.
