Winter Solstice
Winter Solstice

The night is stretched; elastic darkness thinned
by stars that peek through cracks in heaven's floor.
'Tis not a sanction wrought on those who've sinned
but rather nature's respite. Nothing more.

As coldness creeps and icy fingers sting,
the land in fallow slumber once more dreams
of Sol's soft kiss that wakes it in the spring
when night is banished by its golden beams.

The earth has turned its back upon the sun
as darkness celebrates the longest day.
The chill of winter, only half-way done,
feels its cold grip begin to slip away.

The night's obsidian is turned to grey;
the pale light of the morn has found its way.
