A Shadow on the Stairway


There's a shadow on the stairway
There's a devil at my door
Sometimes he's just a whisper
Sometimes he's a roar

No one hears his footsteps
Feels the tension in the air
Sees the way he shows his presence
By blowing through their hair

He taps me on the shoulder
He shimmies up my spine
He blows cold air across my skin
He's with me all the time

I know he'll never hurt me
He whispers in my mind
He tells me not to fear him
He won't leave me behind

When it's very quiet
I can hear him say
He's my spiritual protector
A shadow on the stairway
