Happy Birthday, Clu Gulager!

One of my favorite actors celebrates his 87th birthday today. He was Abilene in The Last Picture Show, 1971. He played with Lee Marvin and Angie Dickinson in The Killers (1964), based on a Hemingway story, but changed quite a bit. He was Billy the Kid on TV in The Tall Man, Sheriff Emmet Ryker on The Virginian, and managed an airport in International Airport. He made many guest appearances on TV shows, including Disney and Alfred Hitchcock.

From there, he moved on to horror movies, both as an actor and director. He has taught acting and special effects. He's been involved in many film projects since his TV days. Today, he seems to have two distinct groups of fans, the cowboy fans, and some of the drama fans, and the other is the horror movie fan group, which seem almost to be a counter-culture cult.

You cannot talk about Clu without mentioning that he was married to one woman for 52 years, an outstanding phenomenon for a Hollywood figure.
