Grinches Everywhere
With all the complaining about a simple phrase "Merry Christmas" and nativity scenes, and so forth, I have wondered what is it that makes so many people feel threatened? Someone said it makes him feel excluded. I don't feel excluded on Cinco de Maio or Chinese New Year or Yom Kippor, and so forth. I respect their special days. They don't have to include me or worry about offending me. So why does "Christmas" threaten people?

Today I listened to someone read sections of How The Grinch Stole Christmas and suddenly things clicked. The Grinch hated Christmas for some unknown reason--maybe his shoes were too tight or a list of other possibilities. He hated it so much that he tried to prevent it. Every adult knows this tale. The person reading didn't draw these connections. But it sounded right. The Grinches all around us, whether jealous, or having bad memories, or just being control freaks, don't want you to use certain words or make certain observances.

However, in the story, even without presents, decorations, or food, Christmas couldn't be stopped. It came any way. The expression of love, joy, peace and family came anyway. So in response to the Grinches, we should not get so worked up and insist on saying Christmas in all circumstances. Don't worry about what some retailer says. It's something personal and individual and unique to each family. Christmas comes from the heart, not outward contrivances. It causes us to be better people.

If the Grinches only understood, Christians actually celebrate Christmas all year long.
