Eating healthy can be a lark.
Many people like to use the start of a new year as the springboard for making healthy changes in their diets. If you're one of those people, what's your go-to healthy snack...something simple, or something a little different? Feel free to include a recipe, or just offer encouragement for anyone trying out a healthier lifestyle.

Manx Cat from Japan

18 degrees and snow when I walked to the barn to feed horses this morning. Brrrrr.

As a snack I like peanuts, pistachios, trail mix. So does my dog. I also like smoothies for snacks. You can actually make them from anything handy but fruit, yogurt, and soy are my favorites. I did not know I could freeze bananas until I started using smoothie recipes.

There are a lot of recipes on www.preventionmagazine.com. (I'm not sure about the address since it comes into my email and I just click on it.) They use coconut or almond milk in some of their smoothies.

I read sometime in the November or December issue of Prevention Magazine about a new way to slow down a runaway appetite. Eat in a normal way every other day. Deliberately eat less every other day.

In my home my husband has sugar diabetes so breakfast and Lunch is when we eat our large meals, with a snack by 5 or 6. Then nothing until morning. It helps regulate sugar levels and keeps weight regulated. Even for people without sugar diabetes this is a good way to slow down snacking.

Healthier lifestyles have to include lots of vegetables. Since I don't like string beans and they are plentiful as well as reasonable in price I found I can grind them up with my NINJA and add them to spaghetti sauce and chili sauce. They do not hurt the flavor of the sauce. They add more vegetable to the meal. I look for ways to add vegetables to meals that are helpful to the person who does not care about vegetables.

Try putting cinnamon on broccoli, I accidentally put it on broccoli one day instead of salt and ate it anyway, what a surprise.

Broccoli tea is great. Numi Inc. makes organic garden teas. Yum. Their sampler has Tomato Mint, Broccoli Cilantro, Fennel Spice, Beet Cabbage, Spinach Chive and Carrot Curry all in one box.

Tomatoes are a fruit so I sometimes eat them for breakfast, fresh cut.

Well I have downfalls such as potato chips, Crunchy cheese curls, and cookies. But I don't always keep them in the house and I do keep the different types of trail mix and nuts. That takes will power at the grocery store. An old tip is never shop for food when you are hungry. Do read websites and magazines that show you new recipes. They can actually make eating healthy fun.
