The Question of Human Origin
Tuesday, April 11, 2017

Prompt:genetics, the gene, or a mutation

The Question of Human Origin

What are we? Humanity?
The argument goes on
concerning the continent
of our origin.

Mitochondrial DNA suggests
that the mother of our species
was born in Africa;
that her genes were spread
through successive migrations
across the planet Earth.

Humanity? Homo sapiens? Homo sapiens sapiens?
What is a name? A label? A scientific designation?
Something to help us understand ourselves
and our origins?
Genetically
we are more alike the unalike.

Half of a human individual's DNA
comes from the mother
and half from the father:
but where did the race...
the species originate?

Does our origin really matter?
Each generation copulates
and procreates
mixing indiscriminately
or discriminately
our genetic code,
our genes,
our mutations
and passing these to the next
generation.

The human race today
is the direct results
of our ancestors passions.

When egg and sperm meet
the only thing that matters
is their genetic compatibility
not skin color,
religion,
nationality,
or political affiliation.

Humanity or Homo sapiens
are a single species:
Does the continents of its origin
really matter
in the final analysis
of our human genome?
