The Lover's Prayer

Goal of my desire!
Forgive the love I have for you
that hopes for paradise,
that sees in heaven its reward
for worshiping your light.

Beloved of my soul!
Forgive the love that fears hellfire,
that shackles me to pain,
that holds above my trembling spirit
eternal punishment.

Answerer of my prayers!
Bless me with unselfish love
that neither hopes nor fears,
but worships your immortal essence
for itself alone.
