I was two when you died,
a child in Pittsburgh
then a dirty, smoky steel city.

I walk today in the cypress swamp
and think of you.

The forest floor may break
beneath us both.

But the moon will still rise
above the hammocks
and the spoonbills will rise
on rosy wings
to their homes.

I will write
and I will hear you sigh.
We all belong
to the secrecy of the seed.
