Daughter of the Desert

In the Negev
the Jahalin had a thousand words
for sheep and goats.
I cannot utter one for freedom.
I love the earthy ocher of my land.
Our homes are nylon, tin, and wood.
Our schools are made of mud and tires.
Men have walked on the moon.
Who will make a planet for me?

Author's Note: A response to a picture prompt. I imagined this woman as a Bedouin living in East Jerusalem.
