Image for BCOF members to put in their blogs Prompt: "A ruffled mind makes a restless pillow." Charlotte Bronte. Your thoughts. How important do you feel sleep is? Do you get enough?"

I think sleep is not only important but mandatory. I suffer from two sleep disorders: Chronic obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy. There are times, particularly after a meal, when I literally fall asleep standing. The sleep apnea is much better now because I did a sleep study and the doctor ordered a cpap machine for me. It's a mask that you wear similar to an oxygen mask that works to keep your airway open by providing pressure to the airway. This prevents me from jerking myself awake in an attempt to regulate my breathing. I am now being tested to rule out narcolepsy, which is a condition in which you simply fall asleep and sleep much of the time. I sleep an average of 12 hours per day some days. If I do have narcolepsy they will treat it by giving me a stimulant such as ritalin or adderall.

I don't have a home anymore, at least not in the classic sense. I live in the West Virginia Veteran's Home in Barboursville WV, where I serve as chaplain. I share a dorm room with another man here. There are about seventy veterans living here and we all live in dorm rooms. The nice thing is that you want for nothing here. They provide everything right down to and including tooth paste. So you want for nothing. The staff is great and treat you with respect. The only thing missing in my life is a woman to share my life with. I have a girl friend but we aren't married.
