In Contemplation: To Dorothy Cruiikshank Coffrey
In Contemplation:
To Dorothy Cruikshank Coffrey

In contemplation we
relive our days of flower and flame,
and in the process sooth the grief
caused by the death of dreams.

In contemplation we
regret untaken autumn walks,
and rue our busy silence
when love ones cease the talk.

In contemplation we
remember starlight in a lover's hair,
and the quiet loveliness
at the parting of our ways.

In contemplation we
put on laughter's invincible armor,
to face the bittersweet reality
of a mother's valentine.

In contemplation we
recount the blessings of nature's laundress,
of kittens on a garden wall,
and the tasks that filled the empty hours
in another place and time.

In contemplation we
embrace the joy of solitude,
the rebelliousness of youth,
and the power of high ideals.

In contemplation we
echo inarticulate efficiency,
the freedom of a butterfly,
the wildness of a colt's first November,
and snowy winter holidays.

In contemplation we
remember the consolation of an empty glass,
the disguise of a convalescent heart,
and at our journey's end
the turning out of time.
