Because we compartmentalize our lives. Work is work. Family is family. Church is church. We divide our time and resources, even our emotions. This is my bridge group. These are my friends who live under the bridge... It's like children who can't have their peas touching their carrots. Heaven help us all.

Because we don't have the mental strength to both see our differences and our sameness at the same time. MAGA hats are awesome! ... or NOT! It's important to divide into USes and THEMs. The two should not touch. If they do... POW! So some see only differences ignoring how much we-all are alike and shouldn't separate us while others see only sameness and don't understand the differences are very real and need to be respected.

Because it's too difficult to survive outside of our boxes. I can't travel because: I don't speak the language; I can't understand the money; I disagree with their beliefs; I would miss my children; I have pills to take... All solvable if changed to "I can" and "this is how I'm going to do it".

Because this is what we are used to... even if it's killing us. A basic fear of anything and everything new or different. Inflexibility, the inability to morph like a caterpillar into a butterfly.

Dividers. We each live inside an ugly bag of mostly water. So we choose to make ourselves miserable rather than celebrate how these fragile living creatures manage to not only survive but create marvels never seen before.
