See what mishaps occure and how Earlin is dealing
Chapter 4
In walked John and Susannah. Earlin and William stood up and greeted his parents. Susannah hugged and tried to soothe her while William and his father went out to the car and got their things. When they came back in both were sitting on the couch talking. Earlin was wiping the tears from her eyes again.
Susannah told them, "Earlin is going in to get ready for bed. We will be sleeping on the air mattress out here. William, you may sleep on the couch if you get too tired to drive home."
"Mom, are you sure you want to sleep on that old mattress? It is getting extremely old and worn out."
"It’ll be just fine."
Earlin got ready for bed. She made the bed with clean, pink sheets, matching pillow cases and comforter. After the bed was made she joined everyone in the living room. She was not expecting the sight she walked in on. "Oh! It's such a mess in here," Earlin cried. While trying to set up the air mattress William and John knocked over a couple of boxes which opened and spilled their contents to the floor. She was horrified at the sight of the turmoil. The automatic air pump was still siphoning air into the already full mattress and nobody was paying attention to it until Earlin gasped. "Your bed is going to explode!"
Susannah turned off the pump. "Oh look what you two have done! Now we have to let some of the air..." She was interrupted by a low sound that could not be identified at first. "Oh no! There is a leak in the bed. We have to find it and get it patched. What am I going to do with you two boys?"
William started laughing. "I told you you’d need a new one. Well dad. Let's go to the store and get another one."
"You’re right son. I didn't even bring a patch kit."
Susannah said, "Hurry up. We need to go to bed so everyone can get a good night's rest so we can get up and work on this place."
Now both men were laughing. They managed to say, in unison, "Yes ma'am," as they trotted out the door.
At the sound of their laughter, Ellen opened her door and asked, "What in the Hell is going on here?"
"I am sorry Ellen. We had a bit of a catastrophe. Oh... Dad, could you wait for me in the car please?"
"Okay," he said as he walked off whistling.
"There has been a change in plans. My parents are going to stay here with us tonight. Tomorrow Earlin will go stay with Detective Clark and I will have both Lily and A.J. Once we are married all of us will be moving back into the apartment. I better go. We have to get another air mattress."
"Okay. If you need anything, I’ll be here."

"Thank you Ellen. We really do appreciate you," William said as he walked away, the giggles starting again.
Once in the car and on their way, John said, "I do believe all of the stores will be closed."
"You're right. That's Okay. I have one at my place. It's old, but not as ancient as yours. You even have a choice as to which side you want to sleep on. The red side has built in pillows and the blue side has what used to be pillows."
"What do you mean, ‘used to be pillow'? Either it has pillow or it doesn't."
"Not this one. Sure there were pillows on both sides when it was brand-spanking new, but now there are pillows just on the one side. Thankfully the pillows had their own airspace. I took it out camping and accidently set it down on a rock. It sounded like a gunshot when the rock punctured it."
"Boy son, you really are a chip off your old man. Your mom is right and oh how she loves to be right." John said, chuckling.
By the time they got back Earlin was asleep in her mom and dad's bed and Susannah, on the couch. They hurried and filled the mattress while making sure to be as quiet as mice. John then gently woke Susannah and told her she could lay down on the bed of air they made on the floor.

The three of them sat up awhile longer discussing the day’s events.
"Son, you have a good woman. Make sure to keep her happy and support her no matter what. I am sorry you two are having to deal with this. I especially feel for her. She won't let anyone help her?"
"Yes dad. I will. She is a very special young lady. I am worried about her, though. She is taking on too much and refuses to let anyone help, like you said. I just wish she would slow down and take her time to grieve."
"Let her go her pace for now. She will grieve in her own way on her time. She is young and afraid... Afraid she won't be able to keep her parents pleased."
"But Mom, she made a list of things to do and won't let me do anything except for what I already did... get the boxes and her school work..."

"Let her do it. Just stay by her side for support. Normally a sixteen-year-old kid does not do this but she is no ordinary girl. All we can do is let her know we are here for moral to support. Right Johann?"
"Yes. Yes. Of course."
"But she is just a kid and shouldn't be doing all of this! I mean she is a young woman, but legally... Oh I don't know how to explain it!"
"Wilhelm. she feels it is her responsibility. She doesn't want to let her parents down. Unfortunately she is in a difficult transition, being in puberty, planning a wedding, finding out her parents are dead so she has not one, but two children to take care of. Not to mention she is with child again."
"What, Mom, are you saying? Dad, did you know about this? Earlin hasn't said anything to me. How do you know?"
"Darlin' she doesn't know it, yet. She might suspect, but she has not taken the test. Don't say anything to her. Let her come to you with the news and celebrate it together. She’s got that special glow like she did with A.J."
"I don't know why she had to lose her parents so we could have another baby. That just doesn't seem fair!"
"It's all in the bigger plan and there is nothing we can do about it. So let's just take things one thing at a time. Okay?”
"Yes Mom. I won’t say anything about her being pregnant and I’ll be supportive in every way possible."
"Good. I am going to bed," She said, as she stood up and pushed her chair in.

"I am going to bed, too. Since it is so late you can stay here on the couch."
"I planned on staying anyway, Dad. I have to be here to help. I took tomorrow off to help around here and to do whatever she will let me do. Good night Dad."
"Good night."
