I've written a fair amount in my life, but never creatively. Check it off the Bucket List!
I think my first week of activity at WDC has gone rather well.

I joined here over a year and a half ago, but I never did anything about it. Becoming an empty nester has made me realize it's now time for me, so here I go. Don't begin sentences with gerunds! Bah! One of my objectives is to get a better feel for rules: what they are, why do we have them, and when can I break them.

I've published three pieces so far, a short story, a poem, and a very short idea for a chapter. I know they aren't worthy of publication, but I needed to write. I think I've caught a nasty writing bug. I also knew components were breaking rules. I introduced characters that didn't do anything, I changed tense, and I over-used adverbs. One is too many, right? But don't you have to make mistakes to learn? Don't we have to touch things to really get a sense of what they are?

The biggest decision I made this week was to be an active reviewer. So far I've revieed 29 pieces of work. A few pieces were really good, almost great, some were downright bad, but most were in the middle somewhere. I don't like using words like mediocre; I don't even like rating work or putting work into slots like I've done. It's human nature though. How would we ever find anything if not for labelling -- although WDC does an interesting job at this *grin*.

I've learned so much from reviewing and getting reviewed. Wow! I can't put into words what I've learned so far. I always knew that when you teach, you have to know your subject. Reviewing is teaching. In nearly every review I've had to research some writing technique.

I upgraded my account today. My main reasons were enabling this blogging experience and the reviewing tool. I recieved a remarkable review where the reviewer's outline, comments, and overall thoroughness blew me away. I had to have it!

I picked a good week to do this too. I earned roughly 48,000 GPS this week. I've won 10,000 GPS twice now in daily draws. And this membership added another 49,900! I'm penny rich!

I'm looking forward to this journey, to making new friends, to helping and being helped, and of course to writing something I'll be happy with.

Later,

John
