I completely agree with your statements on realism. If you pretend everything will be good, you will constantly be disappointed. It is better to prepared yourself with strength and stamina to address that which you cannot control.
I like to think of myself as something of a realist. Depending if my day sucked, I may take a pessimist attitude. I think it does vary, depending the life situations we're put in.
I think I just meant (on your notebook) that I can't describe myself as neither a pure optimist or pessimist. A realist, yah-- that's better. Never all encompassing, of course, as you so eloquently put it, just... When you haven't welcomed a lot of actual goodness in your life, then the bad can tip the scales of the good. Which is my responsibility. Mostly. At least it is now
I definitely see you as a realist Ann and an optimist. You have found in life what some people never find. A zest for life. This is what keeps you dancing through the pages of every day with a positive attitude, it also gives you the strength to pick yourself up when you fall down or when the punches of life try to floor you. These qualities are to be admired. Nice blog Ann.
Bonnie14222 I think those who have positive parenting without painful early life experiences START WITH POSITIVE SELF WORTH, FEELING VALUED THEREFORE VALUING THEMSELVES. On the other hand, those with parents who are emotionally damaging, critical, start early with low self worth and have a long hard way to go before they learn their parents were wrong and therefore they have what it takes to accomplishe whatever will increase self worth. It's all in the parenting and early emotional pain; the lucky ones have good positive loving parents who encourage their child to 'be who your are and reach for the stars.'
If my mother had not been so critical and if the old uncle had not raped me, maybe I would have valued myself much earlier in life.
Thanks Bonnie, Whata and others who nod and smile when reading my thoughts about self value.
Ann - your words on self worth are encouraging. Do you think that you are as comfortable in your worth because of the journey you took to be yourself and that possibly people just starting that journey are more critical of themselves in terms of valuation? I enjoy ready your blog posts and gain thoughtful insight. THanks
