Very interesting! I re read this a few times. I like your title because it focuses on Mother Courage, however as I read it, the beat of the drum really stood out to me because it represents the whole play. The reason for Kattrin's death, the description of Mother Courage acting on the beat of the drum, the war itself.
I came up with "To The Beat Of The Drum"

It was never about Helen. It was about the men's pride. They could care less what Helen thought. They were proving themselves. If they both loved Helen as they claim (not sure if they did claim that), then they would have let her choose.

However, back then, girls very rarely had a choice in the matter (of who they married). It's also possible that Helen set them up to fight each other for whatever purpose she had. (Not saying she did, but she could have). Beside when people have power without boundaries, they do stupid things over a girl. Even today, there are boys that do stupid things over a girl. And I mean to call them boys because real men should not act that way.

History is full of men that fight over the "love" of a girl. But it all comes down to their pride, fears, and need to be validated. It's what they think (or want) the "girl" to say about who they are; not only to themselves, but to the world.

Paris and Menelaus were very important people, so they needed to project that to the people. To them Helen was nothing put a prize; nothing but a conquest. They just confuse that with love.

Maybe it started off because they fell in lust with her. Yes, I meant lust. It wasn't love or they wouldn't of went to war as if she was some type of prize to be won.

The next step is to connect this with what boys today do. They don't have the same power as they did then, so we don't have the war as the results, but the same principle is still there.

So I challenge you to connect this piece and compare it today's culture.

About how boys see girls, and why they want them.

How they go about claiming her as their girlfriend.

Or how boys fight over girls.

Their stupid competitions: Like beating someone in a video game, or fighting over who will care the girl's books.

And if you want, using your life experience to relate the story of Paris and Menelaus to you or someone you know. Or in general.

Has a boy ever fought over you?

Or saw you as a prize to win?

Maybe they use you till they were finished and throw you out like trash. (I hope not).

Or you know someone that this has happened.{/list:name

Also, if you ever watch Japanese animation, you notice how they exaggerate boys lusting after girls.
