July 22, 2015 I'm going to start today to record on a daily basis whatever happens to strike my fancy. So, it is a very cool breezy day. I just posted 5 short book reviews to The Monthly Reading Challenge. I'm suppose to put away some winter wood today from the woodpile outside but I'm playing hookey from work to write so starting this blog will get done. I'm having a daily fight with a flock of English Sparrows that are trying to take over my barn. They are making a terrible mess so they have to go. I have destroyed several nests so far they don't leave but they get out of the barn when I am around. I'm just starting the fight so I guess I don't know how far I have to go to discourage them. I'm trying not to spread myself to thin on WDC because I find so many things that are interesting here and I am trying to work on a new story. I really enjoy sitting at my desk with a cup of tea and reading blogs on WDC. |
In the age of the internet, most everything we say and do online will be preserved forever. Even though our opinions, beliefs, and actions change over time, should we still be held accountable for our words, even words spoken or written years ago? ACCOUNTABILITY  By Who? Accountable means by someone else. Words cannot necessarily mean anything a few seconds after they are dropped into the air. I always liked what Thumper told Bambi -= "If you can't say something nice - don't say nothin at all." But, in the long run you can avoid trauma and heart attacks by spitting it all out there, writing it down. Sometimes, people try to hold others accountable because they heard some piece of untrue gossip. Just because some friend said it does not make it true. So, accountability means watching what you hear, finding out where it came from, and whether it is meaningful or not.  There is a reality that is so old it has become truth and clique as well. Actions speak louder than words. We may not know what started any particular war but the history and evidence of loss is still with us. When you look up wars you will usually find a particular action that started a war. I think there were probably a lot of words that came before the action.  Words can be withdrawn, apologies made, or learning changes the opinion of who wrote it. I'm not really sure people change but, knowledge changes opinions. That's what the media is for, not just to inform about the latest bad thing, but to inform about how the thing is being viewed and why it happened in the first place. There is a part of your news that is suppose to be ongoing. It is part of informing the public.  Is there a strike at a local factory? What are the local workers demands? What is the factories position about their demands? What is the price of the product? How well are the owners being paid? Are the high wages driving up the price of the product, so it is out of reach of the public? How much of this is knowledge you can glean from your news coverage? At one time in our lives newspapers became so expensive we could not afford to buy them. K bought in with a couple people he worked with and they bought one paper and shared it on breaks and lunch time when he worked in a shop. I would occasionally buy a single copy of news magazine off the rack. Because the stories were more indepth. Now, we don't have cable so we get internet. Price wise it is one or the other not both. We have local news and national news off our antenna. The news bits in a broadcast from NBC, CBS, or ABC are quick and give you just the facts of what happened rarely any indepth reporting. I can get PBS or radio and TV. That is where we get some media coverage that is really more informative.  Even on the internet you have to hunt for the truth. You have to be sure what you are reading is accurate and truthful. In some instances there is some value in reading something you know can't be true because you are forming opinion based on knowledge. 200 years from now how will you know whats true?  As an example, technology is aiding with film, pictures and some accurate reporting. Have you ever seen the films of Nazi death camps when the inmates were being set free? Steps are being taken to preserve film, books and other media that will give accurate reports of devastation and man's inhumanities over the passing of time. The object is never forget.  There is lots to think about when writing down words. It is also time to think about not writing it down. I would rather sift through historical writings for the truth, than not have written accounts of it at all. Then, we are doomed to do exactly the same crazy things over and over. WRITE ON! |
