We get mosquitoes here, and they're a pain in the ass. We use insect repellent on ourselves and citronella candles in the garden. As far as I can tell, the citronella candles do fuck all, but the insect repellent seems to work okay.
What's driving me mental at the moment is the bloody flies. Fucking flies everywhere. I empty cans of flyspray into the house and 20 minutes later they're all back again. Little bastards. I'm totally happy to use whatever means necessary to get rid of them if anyone has any ideas, environmentally friendly or not!
Great comment, thank you. I agree with everything you said. Much of what I wrote was just for the fun of ranting. I know we need dandelions to support bee populations, but we don't need to have them on our lawns, not in the city at least. There's plenty of parks, green space, vacant lots etc.
A number of years ago we bought our retirement home in cottage country, a place in the woods next to a lake. The previous owners had a huge beautifully manicured lawn. For the first couple of years I maintained what was there, it was hours of work a week, then it finally dawned on me, what the hell was I doing? cutting the grass and (even worse!) raking up leaves in the woods! I still have a small portion of the yard I like to keep trimmed and cut, but most of the yard I gave back to nature.
