Ramblings about the world and myself

I have never really been able to write every day. I probably won't be able to do it now. I would like to write on a more regular basis. This blog is an attempt to develop a more regular writing habit. I can't guarantee an entry every day.

My husband had a friend who was tall and thin. They called him "slinky." He tolerated that for quite some time. I don't know if anyone still calls him that because we've lost touch. But I never thought about whether or not it might have bothered him.

I tell people here to call me Liam. It works in both Thai and Lao.

I don't share a few silly names hung on me. Been years... may they r.i.p...

I'm not in touch with anyone from school anymore.

In the times that you feel down, always remember, you have so many positive moments in your life with your late wife. I'm sure she would love you no matter what. She saw something in you, that she loved very much and you have a good heart, from what you said in your stories.

I agree, people usually appreciate the effort even if you get some things wrong. I think the only way to actually learn another language is to get past the fear of sounding stupid. Confidence just comes with time. Keep at it!

The major barrier is the fear of feeling stupid or offending someone. Either is fatal to becoming fluent. Just practice and don't give up.

I could understand spanish but it depends on the situation. My grandmother spoke spanish and she was fluent with it and so she spoke spanish to me when I was younger, she wanted water and I gave it to her without question. I was really surprised I did it. I need to start learning to speak spanish because there's a few people that have broken english and they are nice. I know the basics but that's it. I need to know more than the basics.

I'm glad you enjoyed the meal and the people of the restaurant. I hope you will learn more spanish.

Whenever I encounter a person for which English is a second language, I admire the effort and courage.

Via Etsy, I purchased a Charles Bukowski doll from a fellow in Ukraine. We exchanged notes. I told him I admired the courage and resilience of Ukrainians, and he wrote back a personal note in broken English. That was nice.

Thankful for Thanksgiving

I think about this every year on Thanksgiving. Life is hard. This year has been harder than most.

It is very easy to get caught up in the hardships, and forget, or take for granted, all the good things that the Good Lord blesses us with.

As the year drags on, I become more beaten down by life, and more cynical. I get more ill natured and grouchy. Unfortunately my poor wife has to put up with my sorry sour attitude.

Thanksgiving comes near the end of the year after I have built up months of anger and frustration. It forces me to look for and remember all that I have to be grateful for.

Thanksgiving serves as a mental and emotional reset. It enables me to appreciate all the good things in life again, after the distraction of all the negativity of the preceding year.

Thanksgiving comes at a good time of the year. It comes after the I have accumulated a year's worth of negativity. It comes just before all the other Winter holidays. It allows me to get my head right in order to properly appreciate Christmas and the rest of the holiday season.

If it weren't for Thanksgiving, I would get very little out of Christmas. I would enter the New Year already carrying a year's worth of accumulated anger and frustration. I am very thankful for Thanksgiving.
