These are short poems, many written for {item:"EXPRESS IT IN EIGHT or other challenges. Don't let the size deter you, although short and to the point, many of these poems have much larger messages.

Walking alone in the rain
Dampness in joints causing pain
No one beside me in the fog
Until I’m met by a friendly dog

He walks alongside wagging his tail
A newfound friend along the trail
I started out to walk a lonely mile
But this fury new friend has made me smile

When I listen to the blues they always make me sad,
by bringing back the memories of the sad times I’ve had.
So why then do I listen? Why do I bring myself down
listening to blues songs like, “The Tears of A Clown”?

By looking back at sad times, I set my soul at ease,
for they give a true perspective of life’s realities.
See, there were many happy times and these are what I choose,
but I know I wouldn’t enjoy them if I never had the blues.

Our world lies in shambles
while the people are led astray.
The nights are full of darkness
that last throughout the day!

But in these times of trouble,
a light shines through the lands.
It comes down from the Heavens
showing we’re in God’s good hands.

The water was shallow when we left for the day
Hiking and climbing, we went a long way.
By afternoon clouds and rain replaced the sun
Soaked and cold, this was no longer fun.

We all turned around rushing back to our camp
To get warm by the fire and clothes that weren’t damp.
But, the creek was a river, being fed by the flood,
And our flat grassy campsite was nothing but mud!

It’s a hundred and two as I sit in the shade,
Out with my dog, sipping lemonade.
A month ago, I was out shoveling snow
And waiting for spring and the cold to go!

I say, “It’s out of the freezer, and into the pan,
From freezing my fingers to a nice suntan.”
Yeah, the heat is much better, it seems to me,
But my poor Husky wants in, by the cool A/C!

I feel no completeness tonight.
There’s a big ache in my heart
Making my chest feels tight.
Yes, my heart is breaking apart.

Children I cherish, I have no more,
Left me for reasons I do not know.
Mournfully I pace over the floor
My heart breaking painfully slow.

When I try to pick up after Max
By putting his toys in nice neat stacks
He’s in my way and pulls my hair
Then scatters those toys most everywhere

It’s quite a job to train this boy
To sit, give kisses, or retrieve his toy
But I wouldn’t have it any other way
My Husky pup completes my day

A poem I wrote about bewilderment
Turned out to taste like peppermint.
I mixed in sugar and a touch of sage.
It sent my poem into a blinding rage.

Perhaps if I bake it in an oven hot?
That turned the texture similar to snot.
I chopped it up and in the trash it went,
So much for my poem about bewilderment.

Totally incomprehensible; yes the word befits
The many individuals who refuse to use their wits.
In every town and city, nearly everywhere you go,
Is it legitimately handicapped or thinking just too slow?

They hang upon your bumper or run you off the road
And if nobody stopped them, they’d try to eat a toad.
How do they ever make it and get from day to day,
With total incomprehension of finding their own way?

My eyes are heavy, I stretch and yawn;
I close my eyes, I’ll sleep till dawn.
Cuddled in blankets snug in my bed,
When numerous thoughts invade my head!

I turn and I toss, trying to sleep,
I clear my head and count Bo’s sheep.
It looks like I won’t get to sleep tonight;
I may as well get up and try to write.

Another day of gloomy gray
with freezing drizzle on the way
it's overcast with no sunshine
ice and snow enshroud the pine
two more months I have to wait
for spring to show up at the gate
Until late March I'll brave the cold
that makes my joints feel stiff and old

Yes, I do like to wear a hat
I’ll even wear one with a cat
I’ll wear one when I go outside
I’ll wear one when my food is fried
I’ll wear one when I climb a tower
I’ll wear one when I take a shower
I’ll wear a hat, my dear friend Sam
But I will not eat green eggs and ham

She reached her hand into her pocket
Took out something, a golden locket
For you, My Love, I give this gift
For when you’re sad, your heart to lift

I clicked the latch, the lid unlocked
I looked inside, was slightly shocked
There was a tiny picture of my Love
Her nudity covered by a turtle dove

Which key will unlock the door?
There’s only one, there aint no more.
Just slide it in and then give it a twist,
Grasp the key firmly and turn your wrist.

The tumblers click, the door swings wide,
I step over the threshold, I’m safely inside.
I quickly turn the knob to relock the door
There are too many people, I’ll go out no more!

When you write a story
You may share memories
You may share imagination
While seldom showing us yourself

When you write a poem
You may share memories
You may share imagination
While displaying your soul on a shelf

We're leaves in a river
It’s constantly flowing
Floating with current
Wherever it’s going

Ahead is uncharted
Memories of past
Living each day
Praying they last.
