Scapegoat?
April 13, 2005 at 2:10am
April 12, another 3K words and no title. Maybe, Scapegoat. First time that happened. Usually my short stories have a title from the git-go. KIcked this one around for months in steerage. In my head/ 30 / all Yours truly. Modesta Gamble Teff is reminded of a comment for Alabama Courier in Oct, hours after it was first posted: "Your story is too long. Readers like short pieces. Length discourages readers." Say what? It felt good to delete that review. Ah, well. Gu... [Read more]
N C High Country
April 11, 2005 at 10:52pm
Started a brand new story set in NC, 4,000 wds, four pages today, pure fun. 4/5 hours. Went together great. Teff's very tired. Garden finally clear of winter mulch. Progress. Catnip found on rails transplanted well with wild phlox. Well, with the NC series, my heart is in the High Country once more. Good night, America. Signed, Modesta Gamble ... [Read more]
The Second Greatest Story Ever Told
April 7, 2006 at 7:20pm
Recap: Blog 12 follows a sequence of heavy reads discovered like a pirate's treasure, hidden deep in an alcove at Muhlenberg Library. The booty, $16 worth of used books above ground, none showing waterlogged signs of struggle during high tides, cresting threshold safely, slipping right past the Ides of Mach. By weight, both red covers, HODGES' HARBRACE HANDBOOK and the eventual winner of the race, THE STORY OF LANGUAGE (uh-oh out of order, 3 lb, 9 oz* (Edits in green *crit... [Read more]
Binchy Meets Peter The Great
March 29, 2006 at 7:50pm
Subject: Peter the Great meets Maeve Binchy Yeah that's right. Peter weighs in at 4 lbs even, while Maeve is a modest 2 lbs. 1 oz. These are two more finds at our library's Spring Book Sale. (See Blog 10, please.) According to Newsweek the winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize, Peter The Great "Urgently readable .... The work of a master of narrative history." For Robert K Massie's 914 p epic. While the New Yorker kept it even simpler back in '81 with ... [Read more]

God Speed, Your Holiness
March 29, 2006 at 8:06am
Title: Godspeed Ye Holy Father Revised for publication, columnist submital Mar, 29, 2K6) LAST April 2 - We loose a friend. Pope John Paul II, a man of peace and action will be sorely missed. And he was my friend, too, in a metaphysical sense. Dec 23, 1980 in Huntington WV, our house caught fire. The dog never barked, what was wrong with that dog, we never knew for he got taken to a farm and began life as a shepherd the very next week. A book was in my hands at the time, I... [Read more]
SLANG, DON'T DEFEND IT; USE IT
March 29, 2006 at 7:16am
Title: Slang Rant Subtitle: Slang, writers already use it. Don't defend slang. Use it. Coming to the fore in the modern era of mankind's ken for shifts in dialect, say 1567 to 2005, no known plebeian, wannabe writer gets tarred and feathered for using slang. Yes, there's this antiquated English usage directive from Hodges' Harbrace Handbook, Thirteenth Edition c-rite 1998 p. 205 ... "Words labeled dialect, slang ... as well as archaic or obsolete are usual... [Read more]

New Wave New Wave, huh?
March 25, 2005 at 8:41am
Good Morning, America, how are ya? Blog 3 Title: NEW WAVE NEW WAVE To tell the truth, Teff first heard the term 'new wave' in 1990 in college. Apparently new wave's coined in the Seventies. According to The NY Times article: The New Wave Journalism, Gonzo for that decade. 2005 has New Wave New Wave. (Eggland's Best Eggs theme.) Gonzo journalism puts the 'I' in a print author's only outlet. Thus an off the editor's page style began. Like, hey man, Gee ... [Read more]
