What I'd like to contribute here is a gallery of some of the important lessons I've learned recently regarding the writing craft, in an attempt to flush out every precious grain of truth and preserve the things that I have discovered.
My approach here is based on the proven principle: "To Learn... Teach". So forgive me for sounding like I'm an accomplished author, because I'm not... yet.
Very much of what I'm going to include here comes straight from people on this web site who have been kind enough to review my work. So thank you, kind reviewers for helping steer me in the right direction.
I believe that they [adverbs] should be used sparingly…
You could have edited the adverb out!
Just kidding. Personally, I think it depends on the situation. Sometimes adverbs do add some important information and make it easier for the reader to imagine the manner in which something is said or done. The thing that some people don't ealise is that when you're reading something and the adverb is there, you think: "It could have been edited out, the reader will know anyway how it was said." Perhaps he would. But perhaps you know it just because you read the adverb. I find that just as redundant adverbs are annoying and amateurish, a story with no adverbs may be dry, boring and difficult to read.
I believe in instinct. I think every writer should exercise their writing instinct. Rules are important, but we should let our instinct make the final decision.
!! I swear I opened this blog after reviewing your stories!! I didn't know you were reading that book by King... and yet your style at the end of one story reminded me of his.
I truly agree that content is King, and you're saying the mechnics are important too, but secondary. I agree.
Sometimes the King can't be found because he's hidden deep inside a field of spelling, grammar and logic errors. Once all the trash is cleared away, the King can stand and be seen in all his shining glory! And that's a day of celebration for the author and reviewers alike.
