Life as a unionist, passion Power and loss
[Introduction]
Being a Unionist is sometimes seen as one of the most unthankful jobs. Helping people to ensure that their rights are protected are honourable, to say the least. This is often seen as a calling rather than a job. some of us decided to make this our careers. We had the passion to endure the onslaught of employers while standing up to protect the rights of others.
While we climbed the ladder of the hierachy of the Trade Unions it remained a passion and we would do anything possible to protect the "innocent", "less fortunate" and "oppressed". We faught hard and spend many hours preparing and negotiating on behalf of others. The richness of knowledge we received in return was uncountable and we grew in experience and skill. Legally we could hardly be challenged and secured jobsecurity for many. We also dealt with the difficult and unbearable situations of seeing helpless people lose their jobs and eventually their livelyhood.
We saw families being torn apart and in the process our own families suffered as we were spending all and most of our time helping others. We were often blamed by family members and spouses that we are the cause of our own family's breakup! The passion was unfortunately too sweet and we continued without spending a second to secure the bond of our own families. Finally spouses and families could no longer bear the lonelyless and absence.
Sudenly we realised that we had experienced a loss; however our passion was greater and we continued without halting and thinking. suddenly we are at the top, alone and cold. No longer are we surrounded by the thousands we have helped. No longer do we have the warmth of our own families and suddenly the lonelyness and silence becomes unbearable. What were we struggling and fighting for? Was it the passion to help others or was it the power to be the best?
Today I still fight for others, still helping those that need the help! I believe that the Passion brought Power to accept that the Passion is a sacrafice made for very little, if any in return. Would I do it again? A hundred times YES..... Rather the Power through Passion than Passion for Power!!!
