LIAM
Hello? Is there anyone out there?
(BEAT)
Hello? If you can hear me, make a sound, anything?

SOUND: RADIO TUNING

LIAM
Anyone on this frequency?
(BEAT)
If anyone can hear me, please respond? I'm now tuning to emergency frequency four-point-two megahertz.

SOUND: RADIO TUNING

LIAM
Now on four-point-two megahertz if anyone can hear me.
(BEAT)
Ok, if anyone is out there my name is Liam Childs. It's been twelve days since the blackout, and I've only just now figured out how to get the radio working.
(BEAT)
Well, I haven't really figured it out, but it’s working. If you can hear me, please respond. Gawd damn its cold.
(LONG PAUSE)
Ok, I don't care if anyone can hear me, I'm going to talk anyhow, since I haven't spoken a word in almost two weeks.
(BEAT)
If I concentrate really hard I can actually get the power going again, well, well at least some of it… in a very limited area, basically either this old HAM radio, or a light bulb. It's almost like magic, but then didn't someone once say that anything that cannot be explained by science can be mistakenly defined as magic? Sorry I'm rambling let me start from the beginning...

SOUND: DEEP SIGH

LIAM
Ok, here we go. It started about two weeks ago. I came out here to my cabin ahead of George and Simon to get my cabin ready for some winter hunting. I had it all set up and was expecting them to arrive the next day, but then the lights went out. Well, I say lights, but what I mean is everything. Even the sat phone won't work, like the batteries are dead. The generator won't run, and even my truck won't turn over.
(BEAT)
Oh, and I swear at that exact moment, it felt like my head was going to explode. And I think I may have passed out for a while, at least I don't remember much, other than waking up on the floor. I have never had a headache like before. I don’t know how long I was out for, but ever since nothing that uses electricity works.

(CONT’D)
(LIAM CONT’D)
It’s a good thing I’ve kept this place stocked, but being that it’s December, there isn’t much around to scavenge. The firewood pile is full, and I have enough canned food to last a couple of weeks... Luckily it hasn’t snowed yet, so I still might be able to some meat. No issues with shooting, the gun works fine.
About a week ago I grabbed my rifle and hiked back down the road towards the main highway. After a couple of hours, I came across one of the other cabins out here, there was a car parked out from, so I thought I would knock on the door and see if they’ve been having the same issues.
(SWALLOWS HARD)
LIAM
I don’t think I will ever forget what I saw...
(LONG PAUSE)
I knocked on the door, but there was no answer, so... I... checked the door, it wasn’t locked.
(SIGH)

(CONT’D)
(LIAM CONT’D)
As I opened the door, the first thing I saw was the woman, she was laying on the floor face down, her phone still in her hand, blood had congealed and froze in a circle around her head. This was bad enough, and I should have walk away and not looked back. But I didn’t.
(DEEP SIGH)
I entered the cabin fully and closed the door behind me. Thankfully the cold air mean the smell wasn’t that bad. The kitchen was empty, it looked like the lady managed to eat her last meal as the sink was full of dishes. I moved into one of the bedrooms and paused... On the lower bunk bed was the man, dead. His head was a mess, what was left of it, the gun still in his cold hands.
I starred for a few minutes, then started to turn away, that’s when I saw the small foot under the man’s body. I didn’t want to look, and I shouldn’t have, but I walked over the bed and tried to the roll the man over. He was frozen stiff, so I had to use all my strength. The child...
(PAUSE AND FEELING SICK)
(CONT’D)
(LIAM CONT’D)
The gunshot took the small child’s head clean off, mostly.
I threw up.
(CRYING)
I threw up, that asshole killed his wife and blew his kids head off and the fucker took his own life because his fucking phone didn’t work... couldn’t handle this new no-power world.
(SNIFFLE)

SOUND: MIC CLICK

SOUND: STATIC
(Static for a short while to put a break in the narrative)

SOUND: MIC CLICK

LIAM
Sorry, I just need to take a break for minute.
(SNIFF)

LIAM
Let me try to explain what happened next. I’m not really sure how it happened, but I know that I started getting another pain at the back of my head. It started building up and up, I thought my head would explode but I didn’t pass out this time, instead I just screamed, the lightbulbs in the cabin exploded.
