Dear Bored,
One of the things about a site like WDC is that it's something different for everyone. Yes, for the serious writer, there's plenty to learn, strive for, and impart. And for the writer who's looking for a little fun and distraction in addition to supporting and being supported, the auctions and charities can fill some of that need. The auctions can also give members the opportunity to showcase their talents - writing, graphic arts, etc.

I'm not sure if we're losing sight of our goals, though I think it depends on the writer, how involved they become with the other aspects of the site.
