I know that someones estate is assigned an administrator. It can be a lawyer; it may depend upon the will. The administrator may be named in the will. But, the execution of a will, involves a lawyer at some point. If there is now will, or there is a problem with a will, the estate will go into probate court. Sometimes, the state gets much of the estate if it goes to probate court, however.
