Romantic Poetry Contest

Irrevocably

I want to write about you, for you, to you,
but how can I when my brain mushes—
squishes through the grasp of my untamed heart
that pops like fireworks, boom, pop, pow—
crackles at the thought of your blue eyes you hate,
sizzles at the snaggle-toothed smile you also hate.

My smitten mouth curls upwards as your deep-set eyes watch mine,
a silent conversation between green and blue.
The feathers in my stomach are stirred as a shaken snow globe
when your head slowly inclines—soft lips gently touching mine.
And as you sleep, I can’t ignore the irrefutable longing
to press my pursed lips to your freckled, satin shoulders.

You try not to show your smile even though
you know I think the creases and dimples are brighter than the sun,
and those eyes you detest could cause global warming—
not once realizing how beautiful, wonderful you are—
as I have always seen you and will for always.
For a life without you I surely don’t wish to live.
