Daily Flash Fiction Challenge

Her teeth chattered as she huddled in the cold on the bench. He was supposed to meet her here and he was late. He was later then he had ever been. She had waited for him for an hour so far and her lips were blue and her breath was ragged and her eyelids were heavy. She needed to see him and be with him and hold him and she would wait for an eternity if necessary.

She stumbled from the bench and walked haltingly up the sidewalk and back, seemingly trying to warm herself up a bit. She loves him and he loves her and they will be married next week. She will carry orchids because they are his favorite flower. He is supposed to be bringing her a sample of the bouquet, one orchid that is dark purple and represents that deep love they share.

She waits still. She is colder and a miserable, spitting snow begins to fall. Suddenly, she hears a siren in the far distance and she catches a whiff of something vaguely orchid-like on the wind. She turns to the bench, thinking about sitting down before the snow collects but what she sees stops her in her tracks. On the bench is her beloved, with a deep purple orchid in his hands and a smile on his face. She feels like the sun is coming out and warming her as she shuffles her frozen toes across the path to her fiancé and falls into his arms.
