Yellow eyes stared at me out of the depths of the corner. Without looking, I stretched my hand out toward it. The important thing was to pay attention to anything but the corner, to act as though my attention was caught by the television or our conversation or anything but her shy little face. When her cold nose first touched my fingers, I wasn't expecting it, but I didn't jump. No sudden movements. Her little head nudged itself into my hand, stroking itself. By the time we left the pet store, we had become friends--that's how to gain a kitten's trust.
