I thought he had that brooding atmosphere from it. But I always thought Poe pulled that off well, too.
Part of it in Poe's work was linked to the sounds. Dark and dreary. I think long O had something to do with it, too. Use your thesaurus when you're editing, and find out if dark and dreary sounds better than foggy and damp. Say the words out loud and see if you can find the tone you're looking for.
