I only ever went to mine and maybe or or two more around the same time, and that was a couple decades ago. If I recall correctly, there are speakers - the valedictorian, a guest speaker, maybe the principal? unless the principal opens, and then the graduates line up, cross the stage one at a time as their name is called, shake hands with the principal as he hands the diploma over with the other hand, smile for the camera, proceed across the stage. There would have been a rehearsal for it, too. Used to be that graduates would throw their caps, but that's not done anymore (or wasn't in my school) for safety reasons.
